English rose Lady of Shalott (Lady of Shalotte): photo and description of the variety

For those who are just starting to practice floriculture, the Lady of Shallot rose is a real find. She is not capricious, tolerates difficult climatic conditions well, does not require special care, and at the same time has a spectacular appearance.

Breeding history

Rose "Lady of Shallot" was created by David Austin in the most famous nursery in Great Britain. The breeder has been breeding new varieties and hybrids of roses for 60 years. In the park of the nursery, hundreds of their species of different colors grow, among which there are not only English, but also other best world varieties - the newest and oldest.

The variety "Lady of Shallot" was obtained in 2009. Rose was given the name of the heroine of the ballad Alfred Tennyson, the famous English poet, whose 200th anniversary was celebrated in the year of the emergence of the new variety. The girl from the ballad has red hair that resembles the appearance of flowers.

The new variety did not go unnoticed; after participating in several exhibitions and competitions, the Lady of Shallot rose was awarded a silver medal in Glasgow, and received an official certificate from the Royal Rose Society.

Immunity of the "Lady of Shallot" variety is very high

Advantages and disadvantages

Compared to other varieties, the rose has a number of advantages:

  • long and abundant flowering;
  • excellent decorative effect during and after this period;
  • high frost resistance (zone 5);
  • the possibility of growing without shelter in different climates;
  • immunity to major fungal diseases;
  • plant resistance to high humidity and rain;
  • buds appear already in the first year after planting the seedling;
  • unusual strong aroma;
  • the possibility of growing indoors and outdoors.

There are practically no drawbacks to the Lady of Shalot variety. Gardeners note that in a hot summer, rose petals can fade, which reduces the decorative effect of flowers.

Reproduction methods

By purchasing a rose, the gardener receives a grafted plant in a nursery or store. They often run wild due to the appearance of a large number of shoots growing from the stock.To prevent this from happening, it is recommended to get a self-rooted bush. The variety "Lady of Shallot", like all Austin roses, is propagated only by vegetative methods.

Layers

In early spring, before the buds begin to grow, they clean the surface of the soil from foliage and branches under the bush, loosen the soil and make a small shallow trench. Choose a flexible shoot, the age of which is at least a year, remove the bark on its lower part and make an incision near the kidney. Such an operation will help speed up rooting.

The prepared shoot is placed in a trench and pinned to the soil. The end of the layering is attached to the vertical support. The part of the shoot lying on the ground is covered with garden soil, mixed in equal proportions with compost. During the summer, it is necessary to water the cuttings, loosen the soil and remove weeds. In the fall, roots will appear on it, and next spring the seedling is separated from the bush and transferred to a prepared place.

Cuttings

For the preparation of planting material, the stems are cut into pieces so that their length is about 20 cm, diameter is 5 mm. Slices (oblique from below and straight from above) are made with a sharp knife or pruner, the thorns are removed, and the foliage is shortened by half.

Important! Before use, the instruments are treated with an antiseptic to exclude the possibility of infection.

Rooting can be accelerated by soaking the cuttings for a day in a growth stimulator or biologically active solutions (aloe, honey). After 24 hours, they are washed and planted in prepared wells at an angle of 45 °. Cover the stalk with a glass or plastic jar and shade. After 2 weeks, the shelter is slightly raised, and after 10 days, it is completely removed. By this time, the planting material takes root, the buds begin to develop. With proper care, by autumn on a new plant, you can see shoots up to 30 cm long.

Important! The buds that have appeared on a young rose are removed so that the plant directs its forces to the development of the aerial part and the root system.

By dividing the bush

This method is rarely used for propagation of the Lady of Shallot rose, since it is laborious and traumatic for the bush.

If necessary, the procedure is carried out in early spring. The bush is dug up, divided into no more than 3 parts and planted in a permanent place.

Growing and caring for the English park rose Lady of Shallot

To grow a rose, you need a healthy seedling with a developed root system, clean leaf plates and intact shoots. The plant is planted in a place well lit by the sun in the morning and evening, protected from winds and drafts.

Top dressing of the seedling is carried out three times per season. Nitrogen fertilizers are applied in May to build up the leaf mass of the plant. After 2 weeks, phosphorus and potassium are added to the soil, which contribute to the formation of buds, abundant flowering. 3 weeks after flowering, superphosphate and organic matter are introduced, which are necessary for the setting of flower buds and root growth.

Plants are pruned twice - in spring, to stimulate active growth, in autumn - to prepare for wintering.

  • rusta - determined by brown spots on the foliage, which gradually merge and turn brown;
  • gray rot - manifests itself in the form of mold on the buds, tops of the shoots.

To combat fungal diseases, fungicides are used ("Fundazol", "Switch", "Fitodoctor").

The abundant and prolonged flowering of the Lady of Shallot rose can be disturbed as a result of its infestation by pests:

  • bear;
  • rose leaf roll;
  • spider mite;
  • penny;

Application in landscape design

Shrub roses are created by breeders in order to enjoy their appearance. Therefore, the plant must be visible from all points. It should be noted that in the midday heat the bush of the "Lady of Shallot" rose must be shaded so that the petals do not burn out and do not get burned.

Landscape designers recommend using plants in single plantings, group compositions, to create hedges and as accent spots for the lawn.

Grains and ephedra can be used as companions. The bushes themselves are arranged in groups of several plants with an interval of 1 m. If their crown is narrow, the distance is reduced.

Reviews with a photo about growing a Lady of Shallot rose in partial shade

Proshina Ekaterina, 57 years old, Leningrad region
The variety "Lady of Shallot" differs from others in its lush peach flowers. My bush grows on the southeast side of the house, in the middle of the day it is in partial shade. Feels very good - buds do not lose brightness and juiciness, flowering becomes more and more abundant every year. Our weather is humid and changeable, but this does not negatively affect the condition of the rose, it feels comfortable.

Evtyukhova Oksana, 45 years old, Pskov

I have several rose bushes "Lady of Shallot" growing at my dacha. For three years, she concluded that partial shade is preferable for her - she feels bad in the bright summer sun - the petals burn, become ugly. The main thing is that at noon, when the heat is strongest, its crown is in the shade, and the soil is moist. This is not so difficult to do if you think about the landing site in advance.
