Features of growing varieties

On the territory of Russia, many varieties of eggplant are grown in greenhouse conditions. These include the "Long Purple". Open ground is recommended only in the south of the country, where warm weather persists for a long time.

Important! Eggplant is a demanding culture, sometimes you have to tinker with it for a long time, but experienced summer residents advise starting with unpretentious varieties.

You need to divide the growing periods into two stages:

  1. Plant seeds for seedlings and wait for warm months (May-early June).
  2. Transplant the eggplant plants into the greenhouse and care for them.
Advice! The best precursors to eggplant are legumes, pumpkin, onions, and carrots. This helps to minimize the risks of transmitting many diseases to plants through the soil.

Eggplant seeds "Long Violet" are produced by several agricultural firms. All of them require preliminary soaking. Earlier, some summer residents complained about the germination of seeds of this particular variety from the Sedek company, now this problem has been resolved. It is imperative to plant in warm, moist soil of good quality. Eggplant loves warmth and organic matter, looseness of the soil, this variety is no exception.

A good video about sowing eggplant seeds of this variety in three different ways is presented below:

Then the crops are covered with glass or foil and placed in a warm place. The temperature should be at least +18 degrees, but it is better to increase it to + 24-27 during the day.In regions where there is little sunlight, additional light sources for seedlings will need to be installed. Remember, this culture doesn't like:

  • cold (this applies to watering, air and soil temperature);
  • drafts;
  • prolonged absence of the sun.

If there is not enough sunlight, Long Purple eggplant seedlings will be thin and elongated. Such plants will not give a good harvest. The soil should not be overdried and waterlogged, especially if the room cannot be heated.

If the seeds are sown in early March, then they can be transplanted into the greenhouse as early as late May - early June. It is worth noting that eggplant of any variety does not tolerate this process well, the plant is placed in warm soil, do not press down hard, trying not to damage the root system.

Long purple

Eggplant "Violet Long" is planted according to the 40x40 scheme, leaving the same distance between the beds and between the plants. At the same time, about 6 plants are planted per square meter.

For better pollination during the flowering period, it is necessary to shake the bushes of this variety, this will give more ovaries. Additionally, complex fertilizer (nitrogen and phosphorus) is introduced into the soil three times per season:

  • a week before transplanting into the ground, it is necessary to fertilize the soil (if this was not done in the fall);
  • during flowering eggplant;
  • during the formation of ovaries.

The "Long Purple" eggplant bush turns out to be short, erect, it does not need to be tied up. Once the ovaries appear, you can remove some of the lower leaves. The ripeness of the variety must be monitored. Eggplants are harvested in technical ripeness, when the flesh is firm, but not tough. The overripe fruit of the "Long Violet" first turns yellow, and then turns brown; it cannot be eaten in this form.

Reviews of gardeners about eggplant "Long purple"

Feedback from those who have already grown this variety, more than once helped beginners to make a choice and suggest how to properly cope with some difficulties. Let's consider some of them.

Elena Dmitrievna, 48 years old, Stary Oskol
I like the Long Violet variety for its taste and simplicity. I have been planting it for three years in a row, in 2012 the seeds did not germinate well in peat tablets, I had to switch to plastic cups. But at the end of May, the seedlings on the windowsill become strong and tall, pleasing to the eye. We plant at the beginning of June in open ground, since we have a rather warm summer. I keep the seedlings in cups outside for a week to get used to it. The harvest is stable, the fruits are long and beautiful, they lie well and are stored for a long time.
Ekaterina Semenova, 54 years old, Stavropol
“Long purple” was advised to me by a neighbor and gave me five glasses of seedlings. We grew it on our site and somehow this eggplant variety has taken root since then. I sow seeds myself at the end of February, using Terra Vita substrate with the addition of hydrogel in a 1000: 1 ratio. I introduce organic matter into the soil in the fall and then in the spring ten days before the transplant. I do not dive eggplants, as this process can cause additional severe stress to the plants. After the transplant, they noticeably get used for three days, at first they seem a little sluggish, but then they begin to grow. We always have one landing site: on the south side with good lighting. By the way, this plant does not like the wind, you will have to protect it in every possible way. It is easier for those who plant eggplants in greenhouses. This variety is highly recommended for indoor use. Of all my varieties, it gives a stable large yield.
Denis Stepanov, Michurinsk
I have three greenhouses and I plant eggplants in one of them. There are always two varieties - "Matrosik" and "Long violet". I sow the last one in March in glasses: each seed in a separate glass. The variety loves light, without it, it dies, so in our area, illumination 12 hours a day is extremely important. Seedlings are of excellent quality if watering is not limited.Eggplant loves warm water and is afraid of drafts. Before transplanting to greenhouses, I do not do any hardening. I check if the ground is warm, and that's it. I have glass greenhouses, as soon as the variety begins to bloom, I remove the lower leaves and shake it a little, as stated on the package. The yield has never failed. I collect about 5 long fruits from one bush. The ripening rate is approximately 95 days, then you need to walk and feel. If the pulp is no longer tough, I cut it off with a sharp knife.

Conclusion

Today, every summer resident can choose not only a high-yielding variety, but also resistant to external influences. According to statistics, Long Purple eggplant is very popular both in the south and in central Russia.
