Thuja folded Kornik: description, photo, height

Conifers and shrubs are widely used as a design option for landscape decoration. Thuya is no exception. A large number of varieties with various colors, shapes and heights were created on the basis of wild large-sized ones. Tuya Kornik is the result of the work of Polish breeders. The founder was the folded thuja - a representative of the western variety of the Cypress family.

Description of thuja Kornik

From the wild-growing folded species of thuja, Kornik received not only a decorative habit, but also a high frost resistance. Perennial evergreen thuja without loss withstands a drop in temperature in winter -350 C, development is not affected by spring frosts down to -60 C. This quality makes it possible to grow the tree in all climatic zones. And also the priority in choosing a variety is the shape of the plant and a slight increase during the seasonal growing season.

By the age of 15, the height of the folded thuja Kornik varies between 2.5-3 m. The duration of biological life is more than 200 years. Thuja grows in the shape of a tree with a regular conical, dense crown. Folded thuja is shade-tolerant, resistant to strong winds. Thuja is undemanding to the composition of the soil, with an average degree of drought resistance.

The photo above shows thuja Kornik, its external description is as follows:

  1. The central trunk is of medium diameter, tapering towards the apex. The bark is gray with a brown tint, the surface is rough with small longitudinal grooves.
  2. Skeletal branches are short, thick, strong. The arrangement is compact to each other, they grow at an angle of 450 relative to the trunk.
  3. The tops are flat, branched, and vertical. The crown is formed by peculiar folds, young shoots of thuja form the same length, they rarely protrude beyond the boundaries of the visual form.
  4. The needles are scaly, dense, tightly attached to the shoot, rich green along the entire length of the stem, golden on the upper part.
  5. The folded thuja Kornik forms cones every season in small quantities, they are round in shape, 13 cm long, consist of thin scales, at the beginning of growth they are green, by the time of ripening they are dark beige.
  6. Seeds are small, brown, with a transparent light wing.
  7. The root system of the thuja is compact, intertwined, of a mixed type, the deepening of the central part is up to 1.5 m.

In the wood of the thuja folded Kornik there are no resin passages, therefore there is no sharp coniferous smell.

Important! In the hot season, in an open area, there are no burns from the sun's rays on the needles, the thuja does not turn yellow and does not crumble.

The use of thuja Kornik in landscape design

The decorativeness of the folded thuja Kornik gives an unusual arrangement of the upper part of the branches and a non-monochromatic color of the needles. Thuja takes root well when planted or transferred to another place. It does not give a significant increase, therefore it does not require constant crown formation. Thuja is harmoniously combined with flowering plants, dwarf conifers and ornamental shrubs. Thuja is used in single and mass planting for landscaping the urban area, childcare facilities, gardens, summer cottages and backyard plots. As an example, in the photo below, thuja western Kornik in ornamental gardening.

Breeding features

Thuja folded Kornik reproduces vegetatively and by seeds. The generative method is longer, from laying the material to planting the seedling should take 3 years. It is taken into account when sowing that the seeds of the folded thuja Kornik do not have a high germination rate. From the total mass, the sprouts will give only 60-70% of the planting material. Cones ripen by mid-autumn, the seeds are collected and left until spring. At the end of May, thuja is sown in a greenhouse or container, shoots appear by autumn. The next summer, the seedlings dive, leave for the winter, and are planted in the spring.

The vegetative way is faster and more efficient. You can propagate thuja Kornik by cuttings or layering. Cuttings are taken in June from the middle part of the shoots 20 cm in size. The sections are treated with a manganese solution and planted at an angle in fertile soil. In the spring, the rooted material will give shoots, it is planted in a place designated for the cultivar. The harvesting of layering begins in early spring, the lower branch is added dropwise, and they are insulated in the fall. For the next season, it will be seen how many buds have taken root, cut the plots and plant the thuja on the site.

Landing rules

If thuja acquired in a nursery is planted, pay attention to the external condition of the seedling:

  • he must be at least 3 years old;
  • without mechanical and infectious lesions;
  • with a well-developed healthy root.

Disinfection of the purchased tuye Kornik is not needed, all activities were carried out before implementation. Self-harvested seedlings are dipped in a manganese solution for 4 hours, then they are placed in Kornevin for the same amount of time.

Recommended timing

According to the description given by the originators, folded thuja Kornik is a frost-resistant culture, shoots and roots very rarely freeze, but adult thuja has these qualities. Young seedlings are not so strong, therefore, in regions with a cold climate, thuja Kornik is planted in the spring, approximately at the beginning of May. An autumn planting, even with good insulation, can end in the death of the plant. In the south, folded thuja is planted in April and early October.

Site selection and soil preparation

The plant is shade-tolerant, the decorativeness of the crown of the thuja Kornik keeps in partial shade and does not turn yellow in the sun. The site is chosen in accordance with the design decision. The composition of the soil is only neutral, slightly alkaline is allowed.

Attention! On salty or acidic soil, Thuja folded Kornik will not grow.

Light, aerated, with satisfactory drainage loam or sandy loam will do. Thuja is not placed in lowlands with stagnant moisture and in swampy areas. A week before planting, the soil is dug up and, if necessary, agents containing alkali are introduced, they neutralize the acid in the soil. To prepare a nutrient substrate, sand, organic matter, the topsoil are mixed in equal parts, superphosphate is added at the rate of 50 g / 5 kg.

Landing algorithm

They dig a hole with a diameter of 60 * 60 cm, a depth of 70 cm. The bottom is closed with a drainage pillow. For the lower layer, coarse gravel is suitable, the upper part can be filled with expanded clay, the drainage thickness is 15-20 cm.

Description of planting western thuja Kornik:

  1. 1 hour before placing the seedling, the recess is completely filled with water.
  2. Divide the nutrient medium into 2 parts, close the drainage ½.
  3. Tuyu is placed vertically in the center.
  4. Fall asleep with the remainder of the fertile mixture, compact.
  5. To the top, the pit is filled with soil left over from the excavation.
  6. They are tamped, watered, the trunk circle is covered with mulch.

The root collar should be on the surface, approximately 2 cm above the ground.

Advice! For group landing, the interval is 1 m.

Growing and care rules

In the photo, thuja Kornik looks impressive. After planting, the further development of the tree will depend on the correct agricultural techniques: mandatory watering, timely feeding and pruning.

Watering schedule

Young thuja up to 5 years old is watered more often than an adult tree. The schedule is determined by seasonal precipitation. In the hot period, thuja seedlings are watered 2 times a week with 5 liters of water. An adult folded thuja Kornik needs one watering every 10 days with a volume of 15 liters. To retain moisture, mulch is mulched at any age with sawdust, peat or wood chips. Sprinkling is carried out in the morning or in the evening at a frequency of 2 times every 6 days.

Top dressing

The micronutrients introduced during planting are sufficient for the normal development of thuja for 4 years. On the 5th year of the growing season and subsequent top dressing is applied 2 times per season. In the spring they fertilize the thuja Kornik with special means for Cypress or Kemiroi Universal, in the beginning of July they water the thuja with a concentrated solution of organic matter.

Pruning

The natural shape of the crown of the western thuja Kornik is compact, dense with a bright two-tone color, does not require a shaping haircut if the event does not provide for a design concept. Wellness pruning thuja is essential. Sanitary cleaning and shaping is carried out in the spring, removing damaged areas and giving the necessary shape.

Preparing for winter

In the southern regions, there is enough mulch and abundant watering of thuja in the fall. In temperate climates, the Kornik is sheltered for the winter.

Preparatory work:

  1. Water charging is carried out.
  2. Increase the layer of mulch.
  3. The branches are fixed to the trunk with a rope so that they do not break under a layer of snow.
  4. Thuya is covered with burlap on top.

Arcs are installed near the seedlings and a moisture-proof material is pulled, covered with spruce branches on top.

Pests and diseases

Cultivars are less resistant to diseases and pests than wild species. According to the description for the variety, thuja western Kornik can be infected:

  1. A fungus that damages young shoots, they turn yellow, dry and fall off. Eliminate the disease with "Fundazol".
  2. With late blight, which covers the entire thuya, the infection begins with waterlogging of the root coma. Tuyu Kornik is treated with fungicides and transferred to another place.
  3. Young trees are susceptible to fungal infection - rust. The disease manifests itself on young shoots in brown fragments. Thuja sheds needles, branches dry. In the fight against the problem, the drug "Hom" is effective.

The main pest on the folded thuja Kornik is aphids, they get rid of the insect "Karbofos". Caterpillars of moths parasitize less often. If there is a small amount of them, they are collected by hand, the mass accumulation is eliminated with "Fumitox".

Conclusion

Thuja Kornik is a selection variety of the western folded thuja. An evergreen perennial tree with a two-color needles and a vertical arrangement of the upper part of the branches is used in park design and ornamental gardening. Thuja is unpretentious in care, with a minimum annual growth, retains its shape for a long time. High frost resistance allows cultivar to be grown in cold climates.

Testimonials

Marina Tynyanova, 32 years old, Khabarovsk
On my personal plot, thuja folded Kornik have been with me for more than 7 years. The tree is about 3 m high, the needles are light green in color with pronounced yellow tops, by autumn the color of the thuja changes to a darker one. The crown is of the correct pyramidal shape, dense, the branches grow unusually, resembling accordion furs. Thuja is planted in the corner of the fence, except for sanitary cleaning, I do not cut the plant.
Savely Zolotarev, 48 years old, Krasnodar Territory
Many conifers are planted in the garden: in the center of the rock garden there are dwarf forms, along the perimeter there are higher ones, among them the thuja Kornik. It has been growing on the site for more than 6 years, during this time I have never been sick, does not require special attention, I do not form a crown, it is decorative at the tree without interference. If there is no rain, I water it often, every evening I sprinkle it. I don’t cover for the winter.
